Is Winter a Good Time To Visit Oceanside?

Winter is one of the best seasons to visit Oceanside, California, primarily because it’s distinctly different than in the summertime. It's calm, uncrowded, and primed for outdoorsy California coast adventures.

January is the least visited month of the year in Oceanside, which is exactly why it is worth considering a visit at this time. Without the crowds, you can enjoy the attractions and mild weather in peace. Restaurants seat you without a wait, parking near the beach is easy, and the crowds that define summer are long gone.

If a storm does roll through, there are plenty of good ways to spend a rainy day in Oceanside.

Winter Weather in Oceanside

Oceanside runs mild and comfortable throughout December, January, and February. The daytime temperature averages around 65°F with nighttime lows around 47°F. Mornings are cool, afternoons are warm enough to eat outside, and nights turn cold fast.

This is also the rainiest stretch of the year, though precipitation here is a few grey days with intermittent rainfall rather than complete downpours. Humidity stays low, and the wind is gentle, averaging around 7 miles per hour.

Water temperature drifts down from about 62°F in December to 59°F by February, which is wetsuit territory rather than swimsuit territory. But swimming isn't entirely out of the question with the right gear.

When you compare Oceanside with other coastal destinations around the country, the weather is very pleasant and makes for the perfect wintertime escape.

Best Things to Do in Oceanside in Winter

Almost every outdoor activity you would do in Oceanside in summer still works in winter, just with a few more layers on and far fewer people around. A few attractions are actually even better at this time of year.

Here are five that should earn a spot on your winter itinerary.

1. Watch for Gray Whales Off the Harbor

  • Location: Oceanside Harbor
  • Best time: Morning
  • Good for: Families and wildlife enthusiasts

One of the most unique things to do on the California coast is to go whale watching. Gray whale season runs from late November through the end of April as the animals migrate down the Pacific coast, which makes the winter months the best time to spot them.

Whale watching boat tours leave right from the Oceanside harbor, but if you're lucky, you might even be able to see them from shore. Common and bottlenose dolphins do not migrate, so they turn up on trips year-round.

Book a morning departure for your boat trip if you can. The wind tends to pick up through the afternoon, and calmer water makes for a far more comfortable ride out. Learn more or reserve a trip through Oceanside Adventures.

2. Paddle Out for a Winter Surf Session

  • Location: Oceanside Beach
  • Best time: Early morning, all winter
  • Good for: Beginners and experienced surfers alike

Winter brings the bigger, more consistent swells that serious surfers wait around all year for. But you don't have to be a pro to enjoy these waves. Beginners are not shut out either, as the sandy beach breaks sitting just south of the pier stay approachable when the swell is moderate.

You will need a full wetsuit to cope with the chilly water in winter. Most local shops can rent them out to you alongside your board.

Oceanside Surf School runs lessons for brand new surfers all throughout the wintertime months.

3. Explore the Museums

Two small museums sit within a block of each other downtown, which makes them an easy pairing on a cool or rainy day. The California Surf Museum traces the sport's history through boards, photographs, and the stories behind them. It’s open daily.

A short walk away, the Oceanside Museum of Art shows regional contemporary work Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is free all day on the first Sunday of every month, which is a nice way to spend a morning without spending a dime.

If you’re visiting in February, make the most of San Diego Museum Month when there’s half-price admission on a huge host of museums, including some in Oceanside (learn more below). October’s Kids Free event is another great time to save money on popular attractions.

4. Stroll the Harbor at Sunset

  • Location: Oceanside Harbor
  • Best time: Late afternoon
  • Good for: Couples, easy walks, photographers

Early sunsets are the hidden gift of a winter trip. The sun sets no later than 5.45 PM in the winter, so you don’t have to wait until late evening for golden hour. You can watch the light go down over the water and still make a normal dinner reservation.

The concrete walkway that loops the harbor here is flat, sheltered from the wind, and lined with boats. Perfectly picturesque, you could say. Time your walk to reach the west-facing stretch near the fishing docks right at sundown, where the sun sets straight down the channel mouth.

Our first-timer's guide to Oceanside Harbor covers the rest of what you can do in the area.

5. Shop the Thursday Markets

Thursday is the best day of the week to be downtown. The local certified farmers market runs 9 AM to 1 PM and offers local produce, flowers, honey, baked goods, dips, sauces, and more, all year round. You can pick up some goodies to stock your vacation rental's kitchen or some souvenirs for those back home.

In the evening, the Sunset Market takes over the same blocks from 5 to 9 PM, with food vendors, craft booths, and live entertainment. It’s free to enter, and it really brings the local community together.

Winter Events in Oceanside (2026-2027)

The seasonal calendar across December, January, and February is certainly festive, but there is more to do than Christmas and New Year's celebrations. These four annual events are worth building your trip around if the timing is right.

Holiday Tree Lighting

Downtown Oceanside lights its tree on the first Thursday of December to ring in the festivities for the Christmas holiday season. Santa arrives by antique firetruck, and the evening includes live music, performances, and plenty of fun activities for kids.

Details go up each year on the Mainstreet Oceanside event page, so be sure to nail down the date as it gets closer to the festivities. For the wider holiday lineup, see our guide to celebrating Christmas in Oceanside.

Oceanside Harbor Parade of Lights

The Oceanside Harbor Parade of Lights sends fishing boats, sailboats, yachts, and kayaks through the harbor in full holiday dress on a Saturday evening in mid-December. The event is totally free to the public and organized by the Oceanside Yacht Club.

While it's mostly just a fun holiday show, it is technically a competition among the boatmen. Awards and bragging rights are given to the best-decorated powerboat, sailboat, and small craft.

Stake out a spot near the fishing dock and the police station. The route loops back past that stretch, so you effectively get to watch the parade twice.

San Diego Museum Month

The major city of San Diego sits a mere 38 miles from the heart of Oceanside's downtown, and it’s packed with attractions. Even better, all through February, more than 70 museums across San Diego County celebrate by offering 50% off discounted admission.

Our San Diego Museum Month guide walks through how it works and which museums are worth the drive.

Oceanside International Film Festival

  • Dates: February 24–27, 2027
  • Location: Various
  • Website: osidefilm.org

The annual film festival takes over downtown venues in late February, screening independent features, documentaries, and shorts. If you're a film buff or just want to support the arts, catching a screening or other event is a great way to spend an evening.

It is an easy evening activity when the sun sets early, and it draws a local crowd. You can check out the event page for exact film schedules closer to the event if you've got your eye on one title in particular.

Packing for Your Winter Getaway in Oceanside

Packing for wintertime in Southern California can be a challenge because the weather can be a little back and forth. It's neither hot nor cold, which, while ideal for outdoor activities, means you have to pack lots of layers.

You will not need anything you would associate with a cold climate, but you will need more than beach clothes. These are the items that matter most:

  • Layers you can add and shed, starting with a long-sleeve base and a light sweater
  • A warm jacket for evenings, especially near the water where the wind picks up
  • A packable rain shell for the occasional winter shower
  • Closed-toe shoes for harbor walks and cool mornings
  • Sunscreen, because the winter sun here is stronger than the temperature might suggest
  • A swimsuit, in case an unusually warm afternoon shows up or you like to lounge on the beach, or to wear under a wetsuit when surfing
  • Binoculars if whale watching is on your list

If you are debating what else to throw in, our full Oceanside beach packing list covers the rest.
